HDPBC Resources

Whether you are an existing or new user considering HDPBC, this resource page could be beneficial for you. Familiarize yourself with the desktop features, understand training criteria, track the project lifecycle, explore current projects, and find the tools that analysts rely on.

Available Platform Capabilities

Here is a summary of the primary features available within the desktop.

 Feature Description
Bring Your Own Data (BYOD)

The HDPBC desktop provides the ability to import additional data for your project. You can choose to import through any of these streams:

  1. Cohort Data Import via Ministry of Health SFTP (over 24MB)
  2. Small File Import via HDPBC File In Portal (under 24 MB)
  3. Git Repository Import via public URL

Active HDPBC users can access the BYOD user process instructions for importing cohort data to their project. The process varies based on type of SFTP used.

Data export

Approved data analysis results can be exported from the desktop, adhering to HDPBC policies. These may include:

  • SQL scripts, tool syntax, tool outputs, frequency counts, statistical outputs and limited project reports.

As a user you are granted the capability to export analytical output from HDPBC Secure Environment. Detailed instructions can be found within the desktop, under the file path:

  • HDPBC How-To Documentation > Repository > File Import and Export > Exporting Analytical Output from HDPBC Secure Environment.
Data analysis tools

Within the HDPBC desktop, users can access the following tools for data analysis:

  • SQL Server Management Studio
  • R and RStudio
  • SAS
  • Python

To refresh your understanding of the various data analysis tools, we recommend acquainting yourself with the in-desktop guides. These comprehensive manuals are located under the file path:

  • HDPBC Shared > HDPBC How-To Documentation > Repository

To access instructions for installing packages, connecting to the database, and working with data analysis tools, follow these steps:

  • Open HDPBC Welcome Page and navigate to the 'Working with Analytics Tools' section. Select the language of your choice. You will be directed to a GitLab page with information about working with that tool in the desktop.
Probabilistic record linkage

HDPBC offers a service that enables matching records with personally identifiable information (PII) attributes across different datasets using probabilistic matching to add unique person identifiers (e.g. PHN) to records, facilitating deterministic linkage.

For health data and all the datasets available, analysts and researchers are able to use deterministic linkage using PHNs and other identifying keys.

Other

The desktop also provides alternative resources to enrich your user experience, including:

  • How-To-Documentation (instructional files offering detailed written guidance)
  • Walkthrough Video (visual materials with step-by-step explanations of platform capabilities)
